AI Engineering Jobs in India in 2026: Salaries, Companies, and What They Want
The Indian AI job market has changed dramatically in the last 18 months. Here's what's actually happening — which companies are hiring, what they pay, and what skills they want.
Eighteen months ago, most AI engineering roles in India were at MNCs — Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta — or at large Indian tech companies with ML teams doing recommendation systems and fraud detection. That market still exists. But it's no longer the whole picture.
A second tier has emerged: Indian-origin AI companies building serious products with genuine AI at their core. And a third tier has arrived: global companies hiring Indian engineers remotely for AI roles that would previously only have been filled in San Francisco or London.
The market has stratified. Knowing which tier you're targeting — and what each tier actually wants — is the difference between a focused job search and three months of poorly calibrated applications.
The three tiers of the Indian AI job market
Tier 1 — Global product companies and their India centres
Google DeepMind India, Microsoft Research India, Amazon AGI, Adobe Research, Flipkart's ML platform team, Walmart Global Tech India. These roles are competitive globally, not just in India. The hiring bar is equivalent to what you'd face interviewing for the same role in the US. Salaries at this tier for senior engineers range from ₹40L–₹1.2Cr depending on level and company.
Tier 2 — Indian AI-native companies
Sarvam AI, Krutrim, Haptik, Yellow AI, Observe AI, Gupshup, Arya AI. These companies are building AI products for Indian markets — Indic language models, conversational AI, fintech ML, enterprise AI automation. Salaries are lower than Tier 1 (₹20L–₹60L for mid-senior) but equity upside is real, the work is at the frontier for Indian language AI, and your impact on product is far higher. These companies are also growing fast.
Tier 3 — Remote roles at global companies
Post-2024, a meaningful number of US and European companies hire Indian AI engineers for fully remote roles, paying in dollars at rates comparable to or exceeding Tier 1 India salaries. These roles are not widely advertised — they're largely filled through networks, GitHub profiles, and platforms that give hiring managers objective signal on candidate quality. Competition is global, but so is the upside.
What skills are actually in demand
Across all three tiers, the skills that appear consistently in job descriptions and that hiring managers actually test for:
- LLM application architecture — RAG pipelines, AI agents, tool use, prompt engineering that works at scale. Not tutorial-level familiarity, but production-grade design including failure handling, cost management, and latency.
- Evaluation and testing — the ability to design and run evals, build regression suites, and produce quantitative evidence that a system works. This is the most consistent gap across all candidate pools.
- MLOps and deployment — containerisation, API design, monitoring, cost tracking. Engineers who can take a model from notebook to production without needing a separate DevOps person are disproportionately valued.
- Indian language AI (for Tier 2) — experience with Indic language data, Indic NLP, and evaluation of models on Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali or other Indic languages is a significant differentiator for roles at Sarvam AI, Krutrim, and similar companies.
- Data engineering for AI — building training data pipelines, RLHF/RLAIF data preparation, quality filtering. As more Indian companies fine-tune models for local use cases, this skill is increasingly sought.
Salaries: what's actually being offered
These are indicative ranges based on current market conditions. Individual offers vary significantly based on company stage, specific role, and candidate background.
- 0–2 years experience: ₹12L–₹25L (Tier 2), ₹18L–₹35L (Tier 1 India)
- 3–5 years experience: ₹25L–₹50L (Tier 2), ₹35L–₹70L (Tier 1 India), $80K–$140K (remote Tier 3)
- 6–10 years / senior / staff: ₹50L–₹90L (Tier 2 with equity), ₹70L–₹1.2Cr (Tier 1 India), $120K–$200K (remote Tier 3)
The remote Tier 3 market has compressed somewhat from its 2023 peak, but dollar-denominated roles for Indian AI engineers with verifiable skills remain materially above domestic equivalents when adjusted for purchasing power.
Bangalore, Hyderabad, or remote?
Bangalore remains the primary hub. The highest density of Tier 1 India centres, most Tier 2 AI companies, and the strongest professional network are there. Hyderabad is a strong second for Tier 1 (Microsoft, Amazon, Google have large presences). Chennai and Pune are meaningful but smaller markets.
Fully remote is increasingly viable for Tier 3 roles and for some Tier 2 companies that have adapted to distributed teams. The caveat: fully remote roles require a stronger remote-visible portfolio — your GitHub, your challenge scores, your published writing — because hiring managers cannot rely on in-person signals.
How to stand out in this market
The Indian AI engineering candidate pool has grown dramatically. What worked in 2023 — completing Andrew Ng courses and building a chatbot — no longer differentiates. The bar has risen.
What does differentiate in 2026:
- Verifiable work. Code that ran against external test inputs and received an objective score is worth more than self-reported projects. This matters especially for Tier 3 remote roles where hiring managers cannot evaluate you in person.
- Depth over breadth. Being genuinely excellent at RAG pipelines — understanding retrieval strategies, evaluation design, failure modes — beats having surface familiarity with eight different AI frameworks.
- Production thinking. Evidence that you've shipped things, monitored them, and fixed them when they broke. Not just demos.
- Contribution to Indian AI. For Tier 2 roles specifically, contribution to Indian language AI — whether open source, research, or published work — is a very strong signal.
The engineers who are landing the best roles in 2026 are not necessarily the ones who know the most. They're the ones who have made their knowledge verifiable to people who don't know them.
